Thank you!
Thank you to each and everyone who sent in items for our "stockings" and for our class party! We had such a fun time today. The food was outstanding, and the toys and other goodies in the stockings were a huge hit. Thank you also to the parents who were able to come today and help. As always, we couldn't do it without each contribution. We really appreciate it!

December's Genre & Project
The literary genre “tales” is also known as folktales and includes any traditional, usually anonymous, story handed down orally among a people. The stories might be fairy tales, tall tales, or fables. Legends and myths also fall into this category.
Your genre project this month is to read at least two folktales and create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two tales. Remember, a Venn diagram uses two interlocking circles where similarities go in the middle and differences go in the outer circles. Your Venn diagram may be on paper of your choice but please not larger than half a sheet of poster board.
You must read both of the tales that you use, and you may NOT use the Disney versions of either tale. (You also may not use tales read aloud in class as one of your two choices.) They do not have to be AR books or stories. You need to read two stories that are of the same type, such as two tall tales, two different myths about the same general idea (why the sun and moon are not in the sky at the same time), two different versions of the same fairy tale, etc. You may read a traditional fairy tale and then compare it to its “fractured” version.
Please get your two tales approved no later than 12/12 before you begin your Venn diagram. Be sure to have the book(s) at school when you get approval.
To earn an A on your folktale genre project, you must include the origin of each of your tales, any author or illustrator listed, the title of each tale, and at least 8 excellent comparisons in each of the three sections of your diagram. Neatness, including correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar, are very important. Feel free to illustrate your project. Your Venn diagram must be turned in by Friday, December 19. The project will count as two test grades.

Genre Project: Historical Fiction Travel Brochure
Historical Fiction Genre Project: Travel Brochure
*Genre assigned 11/3/08. Project assigned 11/11. Both the AR quiz and the brochure are due by 11/25.
Design a travel brochure to entice people to read your book. Use your novel’s setting during the historical time period! You are basing this project on the book that you read. (It is not a social studies research project.)
1. Fold a sheet of plain white paper into thirds to create the brochure.
2. On the front flap of the brochure, write the title and author of the historical fiction novel you read. Also include the setting of the novel (the name of the place featured in your book and the time period). Illustrate the front flap with one or two of the main attractions of this place mentioned in your book during this time period. You might add a sentence or two to entice time travelers to read this brochure.
3. On the other flap, include as many attractions (or reasons to visit) as you can. Write reasons that travelers would want to visit each attraction. If there is not a lot to see or do in your book’s setting, be creative and think about how you could make this place and time period appealing to tourists. If you use illustrations to showcase these attractions, be sure to include a brief caption for each one.
4. On the inside three panels, create a timeline of events from the story. Include at least 5 different events to help retell the story. If your book uses dates, please include them. Sequence the events in order from the beginning to the end. Be sure to include the main characters since these events were happening to them. Label any illustrations you use. (Be sure to plan out this section before you begin your final brochure.)
5. On the back, rate this book from 1-10 (1 is the worst ever; 10 is the absolute best ever) and give a reason for your rating. Also write down your AR score and your name. Include any additional information that might persuade travelers to visit or readers to read your book.

Email us or send us a note in an envelope with payment. We will call or email you when the order is in so your child will not know about your purchase, and you can pick it up at your convenience. Today we pause to remember all the men and women who have served our country. Thank you, veterans! We appreciate the freedoms you have helped us earn and keep.
Tomorrow we will celebrate our local veterans with an assembly beginning at 9 AM in the gym.
Here are a few of the heartfelt letters our students wrote (as they wrote them!) to show their appreciation:
Dear Veteran,
Thank you for being so generous to serve in the military for our country. I really appreciate that you would do that. I honor you dearly, for your patriotism and curage. As you know, surviving in the military is deathly dangerous and sometimes scary. Again, I thank you for your kindness, bravery, courage, patriotism, and generousity to defend our country!
Sincerely,
Kaila H.
Dear Veteran,
I am grateful that you served in the military on behalf of our country. I appreciate the sacrifices you had to make being a United States' soldier.
If you were in the Iraq war or another war, I bet you really missed your family. I hope you will always be safe and thank you for making me feel safe every night.
Sincerely,
Michael
Dear Veteran,
I would like to thank you for defending our freedom & our country. I'm sure our country would be different if we didn't have people like you. I'll pray for you every night. May Jesus bless your heart. May God bless your soul. May the Angels watch over you.
Sincerely,
Jared
Dear Veteran,
I would like to thank you for serving in the military. You are the reason I am living in a free country today. I am glad that I can speak as I want. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Kayla G.
Dear Veteran,
I would like to take this time to thank you for supporting our country during the war. I bet you were very scared throughout the war. I want to say "Thank you." for you great courage. I know your families missed you very much while you were away serving our country. I hope that they wrote you a lot of letters to cheer you up.
Sincerely,
Madison

Congrats to our class!
Our class brought in 5 gallons of soda pop tabs for 4-H to donate to the Ronald McDonald House! We came in 2nd place (Mrs. Lewis & Mrs. Holt's class brought in 10 gallons!), and Mr. Jennings will be treating us to ice cream sandwiches for our generosity. Great job for a worthy cause!

Picture Retakes
Picture retakes will be Wed., 10/22, for anyone who was absent or who requests them.
Welcome back!
Hope you had a great fall break! Today marks the beginning of the 2nd nine weeks and a fresh start for each student. Everyone is back to a 100 in conduct. AR & AM goals also start over, though some may be "tweaked" a bit as needed.
Tonight's homework is to write spelling words in ABC order in the agenda. Also, a few students needed to finish the language arts unit 1 review. Their mystery genre (project coming soon) is due by the 31st. Please check your child's agenda for any other assignments.
This Thursday is Papa's Pizza "Dough Raiser" night. Present your "ticket" when you order, and 10% of the proceeds come back to our school! Also, the class with the most participants will get a pizza party. Mrs. Lewis & Ms. Holt's class enjoyed theirs today, so we're hoping we're next! Help us out if you can! Thanks in advance.
Friday is our Book Character Dress Up Day. Students may come in costume as long as they also have the book their character is from. They will give a brief talk about their book and their character to earn extra credit in reading.
Finally, Friday is a half day for parent/teacher conferences (students dimiss about 11:30; lunch will be served at school). If you did not receive a conference request notice and would like one, please let us know and we can schedule one. Report cards will go home Friday to be signed & returned ASAP.

What's a WOW?
Each student should have a copy of their WOW (Word of the Week) assignment in their binders. Here it is online just in case you need it. Students receive a grade in both reading and English for this weekly work.
W.O.W. (Word of the Week)
As you read your AR book, be on the lookout for a word that is new to you (one that you don’t already know the meaning of). This word will become your W.O.W. Be ready on Wednesday morning of each week to turn in the following information about your word. You will receive a reading and an English grade for this weekly assignment.
*Use the correct heading on your paper:
First & Last Name with #
Date
W.O.W.
1. Write the complete definition of the word (30 pts.), including its part of speech (5 pts.). Feel free to take home your “pink” dictionary if you need to.
2. Write the title of the book (10 pts.), page number (5 pts.), and the sentence in which the word appears (10 pts.). Be sure to capitalize and underline the title correctly. Use quotation marks around the book’s sentence and underline your W.O.W. in the sentence.
3. Write a synonym OR an antonym for your word (10 pts.). Be sure to write a complete sentence. You can use either of the following: ______________ is a synonym for W.O.W. OR ______________ is an antonym for W.O.W. (Of course you would write your actual word in place of W.O.W.) Occasionally a word does not have a synonym or antonym. In that case, write “W.O.W. does not have a synonym or antonym.”
4. Write a fabulous fifth grade sentence using your word in context to help explain what your word means, OR illustrate your word and include an appropriate caption or dialogue (30 pts.). Underline your W.O.W.
5. You can earn extra credit by listing other words in the same word family as your word. These are not necessarily synonyms or antonyms. They actually use the word base in different forms. For example, words in the same family as "fortunate" would be fortunately, unfortunate, and unfortunately.
