We have lots of important information going home today! Please read through the orange communication folder carefully. You will find our May newsletter and your child's Writing Test scores. Please keep these at home. You will also find a progress report to sign and return. Please sign the weekly log in the folder. There are NO signed papers this week since we didn't do much graded/written work during the CRCT week.

Please pay careful attention to the weekly AR & AM goals. Some students are doing really well, but we're afraid that others will be disappointed at the end of the year when they are unable to participate in several very fun activities.

Award-Winning Books

Assigned 3/8/11; project due NO LATER THAN 3/31/11

This month’s genre project is not based on a specific literary genre; rather, you are to read a book that has won an award of some sort. It needs to be an AR book that you quiz on by the end of the month. You will share your book and its award(s) using one of the projects below, including an oral presentation {10 pts.}. You may share your project before the 31^st. Whatever project you choose to create, be sure to include the following information:

Title of book and author {10 pts.}
Award(s) and what the award(s) mean(s) {20 pts.}
A summary of the plot, characters, and setting (without giving away the ending) {30 pts.}
A recommendation of the book {10 pts.}

Here are a few project suggestions. If you have an idea not on the list, be sure to get your idea approved before beginning. Make sure that no matter what project you choose, you include all of the abovementioned elements and that it is appropriate to your book {10 pts.}!

Create a new book jacket (front/back cover), a mobile, or a diorama (complete with illustrations and award).
Create a timeline showing a chain of important events from the book.
Dress as one of the characters and act out a characterization, or put on a puppet show.
Fill a paper bag with symbols or artifacts from the book. You will need to explain how each one relates to the book you read.
Talk to the class about your book by saying a little about the author, explain who the characters are and explain enough about the beginning of the story so that everyone will understand what they are about to read. Finally, read an exciting, interesting, or amusing passage from your book. Stop reading at a moment that leaves the audience hanging and add something like, "If you want to know more you'll have to read the book." If the book talk is well done almost all the students want to read the book.
Appeal to your classmates’ stomachs by making an edible book report! Locate a recipe for a food dish that plays a role in a book or one that represents the setting of the book. When you share the food with your classmates, you will need to explain how the dish relates to the book read.
Create a map highlighting places described in the story. Many of the map’s features should be based on information provided by the book’s author. The map might show the immediate neighborhood or community in which the book takes place; if the author offers ample description of the home or another place as the central setting for the book, then your map might detail that place. In most cases, the completed maps will involve some conjecture on the part of the mapmaker. Explain his or her reasoning when you present your map and book to the class.

Whatever you choose, make sure that your project is neat (as in legible and creative) {10 pts.}! Both your AR test score and your project score will count as a reading test grades.

The Great Graph Project

You are going to choose a topic that interests you, collect data, and present your information on a graph. You might conduct a survey or record scientific evidence. For your final project, you will create a poster (or mini poster) that includes your graph and interpretations of your data (see below).

For your final project, you will create a graph of your data. Be sure to follow correct graphing procedures (title, labels, appropriate scale and intervals, etc.) and make your graph legible. Write a summary sentence of your data and any trends you found. For example, if your graph is a survey of favorite music, your summary sentence might be, “Most students in our class prefer country music.”

Also include the range of your data, the mean (average), the median, and the mode labeled on your final project. Remember to turn in a neat copy of the data you collected.

4-H CPA TIMELINE Dyer/Martin 2011

Your job is to become the expert on your topic. You will be writing a report and then giving a speech to teach the class what you’ve learned. This project will count as a test grade in English and either science or social studies (depending on your topic).

2/3 Topic due! You must get your topic approved before you begin.

1/31 – 2/8 Begin research and learn all that you can about your topic. Find some interesting facts that very few people already know. Taking notes about what you learn will be very helpful. Remember to take notes in your OWN words. Do not copy directly from books and/or the Internet. Organize your information as you go. What are the three (or more) main ideas you will teach us? What would you include in the beginning of your report/speech, in the middle, or at the end? Remember to use at least three different sources for your information (encyclopedias, books, internet sites, interviews with experts, etc.).

2/8 Turn in a copy of your outline of the three main ideas you will teach us with at least three supporting details for each main idea. Continue to work on your research and your report.

2/15 Your written introduction is due. (The body of your speech is not due at this time.)

INTRODUCTION:

1. Hook your audience!

*Ask a question, state an interesting or amazing fact, or share an anecdote (personal short story).

2. Introduce yourself and your topic.

3. Share your three main ideas or most important things.

2/22 Your entire written rough draft is due. Rewrite your introduction with the revisions. Use your outline to write the body of your report. You will write more than one paragraph about each of your three main points because your report will be the basis of your five-minute speech. Make sure you have transitions between each of your three main points. Include at least one simile in the writing. Then wrap it up with your conclusion.

CONCLUSION:

1. Use a wrap-up word or phrase (Finally, In conclusion, To summarize, Remember…).

2. Restate your main ideas from your introduction in a slightly different way.

3. Tie your report back into your hook.

4. Thank your audience. (Do NOT say that’s all I have, or the end…)

2/22 – 3/3 Work on your two (or more) posters. Write your speech on numbered note cards. Be certain they are neat. Also, they need to be legible from the back of the room. Stay away from light colors because they are harder to read from a distance. Make your note cards and practice your speech. Practice referring to your posters during your speech. Do not wait to share them at the end.

3/4 In-class presentations (Be sure to bring your completed posters!)

You will receive a score for the mock presentation using the rubric Mr. Jennings provided. Please review it to make sure you know what is expected.

3/5 – 7 Make any corrections to your cards, practice at home, feel confident, and be ready for the judges!!! You’ll feel more confident if you practice at home. Good luck.

We have had a great day today! Thank you so very, very much for your generosity today, from snacks at our party to goodies for the kids and for the teachers! We love each and every one of you!

First Baptist Church gave each student a black toboggan hat with a panther paw! We asked students to write their names in the tags in the top so that they will be able to keep up with them.

A few updates:
*Students who brought their biography projects and presented today earned five bonus points.
*Students who did not present today need to present on Monday 1/3/11 (no late penalty).
*We have rescheduled the movie for Wed. 1/5/11. A new permission slip will be sent home 1/3/11 to be signed and returned. The cost is $5 if not already paid.

You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services. How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?
